České Budějovice was founded by the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II in 1265. Přemysl Otakar II Square is a central public space in the historical centre of České Budějovice, currently named after the founder of the city, the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II, and with an area of 1.7 hectares it is one of the largest square squares in the Czech Republic.

Samson's Fountain is a baroque fountain standing on Přemysl Otakar II Square.

The South Bohemian Museum has its main exhibition in a building built in the historicist Neo-Renaissance style in 1899-1901. It was opened to the public in 1903.
